You are viewing BuildBook for Autodesk Fusion
Install BuildBook
Download BuildBook and add it to Autodesk Fusion. No programming tools are needed: no Git, no PowerShell, no Terminal. It takes about 5 minutes.
Before You Start
You need
Autodesk Fusion, installed and signed in
Windows 10 / 11 or macOS
An internet connection
Cost
Free and open source (MIT licence)
Safe for your designs
BuildBook only adds to Fusion. It never changes your design’s geometry.

Windows: The Installer
The easiest way on Windows
One download, one click.
Installs for your Windows account only, so no administrator password is needed.

1. Download
Open the latest release page on GitHub. Under Assets, click BuildBook-Setup-<version>.exe. It downloads to your Downloads folder.
2. Run It
Double-click the downloaded file.
Windows may show a blue box saying “Windows protected your PC”. That’s normal for small free tools without a paid code-signing certificate. Click More info, then Run anyway. All of the source code is on GitHub.
3. Install
Accept the licence (MIT: free to use), click Next, then Install, then Finish.
If Fusion is open, the installer reminds you to restart it.
4. Restart Fusion
Close Fusion completely (File → Exit, or the X on its window), then open it again. BuildBook starts by itself.
Mac: Copy BuildBook Into Fusion
No Mac installer yet
Installing is copying one folder into Fusion’s add-ins folder.

1. Download
Open the latest release page and, under Assets, click BuildBook.zip.
Open your Downloads folder and double-click the zip. It becomes a folder called BuildBook.
2. Open Fusion’s Add-Ins Folder
In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder… (or press ⇧⌘G), paste this and press Return:
~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Autodesk Fusion 360/API/AddIns
If it says the folder can’t be found, open Fusion once, then try again.
3. Copy BuildBook
Drag the unzipped BuildBook folder into that AddIns window. If macOS asks to replace an older one, choose Replace.
Note: the folder name must stay exactly BuildBook (not BuildBook 2 or BuildBook-main), and it must have BuildBook.py directly inside it.
4. Restart Fusion
Quit Fusion (⌘Q) and open it again.
Windows Without The Installer
Same as the Mac steps
Use this if you’d rather not run an installer.

Copy The Folder By Hand
- Download BuildBook.zip from the latest release.
- Right-click the zip → Extract All… → Extract.
- Press Windows + R, paste the folder below and press Enter.
- Copy the extracted BuildBook folder into that window. Copy the folder that has
BuildBook.pydirectly inside it, not a folder around it. - Restart Fusion.
%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\API\AddIns
For Developers: Install With Git
Follow the latest changes
Clones the repository to ~/BuildBook and links the add-in into Fusion. Run it again to update.
Windows (PowerShell)
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/RobotsMadeSimple/BuildBook/main/install/install.ps1 | iex
Mac (Terminal)
bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/RobotsMadeSimple/BuildBook/main/install/install.sh)
Find BuildBook In Fusion
Where it lives
UTILITIES tab → ADD-INS panel → BuildBook (in the Design workspace).

Open The Panel
Click the BuildBook button once. Its panel opens docked under the Browser, with the Steps, Step, Parts and Export tabs and Settings (the gear). The panel remembers where you put it.
To check it’s running: open UTILITIES → ADD-INS → Scripts and Add-Ins (or press Shift + S), then the Add-Ins tab. BuildBook should show as running, with Run on Startup ticked. If it isn’t, select it and click Run.

Update Or Uninstall
Your manuals are safe
Build manuals live inside your Fusion designs, so updating or uninstalling never touches them.
Updating
- Windows installer: download the newer BuildBook-Setup-<version>.exe and run it. It replaces the old version and keeps your settings.
- Copied folder (Mac or Windows): download the new zip and copy the folder over the old one (choose Replace).
- Git: run the install command again.
Then restart Fusion, or reload BuildBook without restarting: Settings (gear) → Add-in → Reload BuildBook.
Uninstalling
- Windows installer: Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find BuildBook for Fusion, click ⋯ → Uninstall.
- Copied folder: delete the BuildBook folder from Fusion’s add-ins folder.
- Restart Fusion.
BuildBook keeps a few files of its own (logs, picture previews, your defaults) and leaves them in case you reinstall. Delete this folder to remove them too:
Windows: %APPDATA%\RobotsMadeSimple\BuildBook
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/RobotsMadeSimple/BuildBook
Troubleshooting
Still stuck?
Open an issue on GitHub with what happened and the end of BuildBook’s log (in the logs folder inside the folder above).
No Button After Restarting Fusion
Open Scripts and Add-Ins (Shift + S) → Add-Ins tab.
- Listed but stopped: select it, click Run, and tick Run on Startup.
- Not listed: the folder is in the wrong place or has the wrong name. The add-ins folder should contain
BuildBook\BuildBook.py, notBuildBook-main\BuildBook\BuildBook.py.
“Another Copy Of This Add-In Is Already Running”
BuildBook is installed twice, e.g. once by the installer and once by hand or with Git. Keep one: in Scripts and Add-Ins, stop and remove the extra entry, or delete the extra folder.
The Installer Says Fusion Is Open
You can carry on: the new version starts the next time Fusion opens. Or close Fusion first.
The Panel Opens Blank Or Grey
Close the panel and click its button again. If it stays blank, restart Fusion.
